Put Your Hands Up In The Air

The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realization that this is what the child will always need can hit hard. ~Sloan Wilson

In celebration of Memorial Day, and to keep up with her younger brother, Maddie learned how to ride her bike! We took them to the Discovery Trail where they could ride traffic- free.

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. ~Ernest Hemingway
Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world. ~Grant Petersen
When I go biking, I repeat a mantra of the day's sensations: bright sun, blue sky, warm breeze, blue jay's call, ice melting and so on. This helps me transcend the traffic, ignore the clamorings of work, leave all the mind theaters behind and focus on nature instead. I still must abide by the rules of the road, of biking, of gravity. But I am mentally far away from civilization. The world is breaking someone else's heart. ~Diane Ackerman
The bicycle, the bicycle surely, should always be the vehicle of novelists and poets. ~Christopher Morley

Memorial Day Weekend

Our friends, Adam and Jeannine, graciously invited us to spend some of the holiday weekend at Olympic Lutherhaven with their family. We all had a fabulous time.

Four No More

Today, on his birthday, Steitler rode his bike without training wheels! The kids begged Ben to take their training wheels off on Sunday and Steitler has been practicing a little each day. This afternoon, I look up, see him peddling by, his voice gradually getting louder and louder, saying, "I'm doing it, I'm doing it! Someone look! I'm doing it!"

Cake and Presents

To celebrate 5, Steitler wanted a carrot cake that he saw at Costco. This particular cake was a huge sheet cake with little carrots on each piece that fed 45 people. Luckily, I was able to semi-recreate the cake for him and he was thrilled.

Birthday Day

Steitler decided to have his birthday lunch at Burger King because they have Spider-Man toys.
After lunch we went to Sequim Bay State Park.

Gloves On

First, Reba. Then, Gilmore Girls. Now , the CW is officially dead to me.

A long time ago, we used to be friends
But I haven't thought of you lately at all
We used to be friends a long time ago.
We used to be friends a long time ago.
We used to be friends a long time ago.

Farewell

When the CW announced that it had canceled Gilmore Girls, I was heart broken since the last episode of the season had already been filmed. I thought we, the viewers, were going to be left with loose strings and lost friends. After seeing last night’s series finale, the show could not have ended any better. After a run of bad luck, Rory got an offer to hit the campaign trail as a reporter; she was back to the spunky, over achieving Rory we love. She only had 3 days until the job started and her careful list making, excitement, and nervousness were completely in character. With the sudden change in plans, we saw Lorelai’s frantic attempts to salvage all the time she had left with Rory. It was touching in a quiet way, no absurd crying or overly sentimental gestures, just a mom missing her daughter, her best friend. Even the lovely compliments from Richard and Emily were typically guarded, yet so generous. Miss Patty and Babbette’s disappointment in the canceled graduation re-enactment and Rory and Lane’s talk about growing up together in Stars Hollow, made the farewell party from the town so much more endearing. The town of Stars Hollow wanted to tell Rory how proud they were of her; we all wanted to tell her. I loved the fact that Luke organized the party as a surprise for Rory and Lorelai. Lorelai always leaned on him for things here and there that she needed help doing, but this time, Luke stepped up. He organized the party and then stayed up all night sewing the tent to keep out the rain. No one wanted a tear-filled cheesy love scene between Luke and Lorelai; the kiss on the street in front of the diner was perfect since so much of their history involved that exact spot. In the end, Lorelai and Rory are sitting in Luke’s diner having breakfast. No tearful good-byes, just lots of coffee and food and each other. Just the way we would want to say good-bye.

In the beginning, Gilmore Girls was a fast-talking, witty, endearing show about a mother and her daughter. In the end, Gilmore Girls was all of those things and much more.

If you're out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I'll be there in the next train
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
